CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (March 16, 2011) — Maverick Biofuels, a second-generation biofuels company, today announced that Eric Cumming has joined the company as Vice President of Corporate Development. The veteran entrepreneur will focus on fund raising and strategic alliances for Maverick as it commercializes technology to convert waste biomass and other feedstocks to mixed-alcohol biofuels.

Eric has nearly 30 years of executive and entrepreneurial experience in technology, building systems, energy and venture funding. His energy experience ranges from the development of residential and light commercial solar energy equipment, to high-end systems-built residential custom building projects. Eric's roles have included product development and technology architecture, as well as product management and fund raising. Eric earned his MBA from the University of Michigan and his B.Sc. from Oakland University.

“Eric brings a strong background in business development and corporate leadership along with a real passion for clean energy,” said Sam Yenne, chief executive officer for Maverick.

Maverick is planning to build a biorefinery to produce mixed-alcohol biofuels from biomass and municipal solid waste. With 85% of the energy of gasoline, Maverick’s mixed-alcohol biofuel is a superior replacement for ethanol in fuel blends and can eliminate the use of gasoline in flexible-fuel vehicles. The pilot scale biorefinery is the next step towards design and construction of a large-scale commercial facility.

Maverick is currently raising its first round of financing to build the pilot biorefinery. Site selection and groundbreaking is expected in 2011 with first production following in 18 months. The company is pursuing a hybrid business model that consists of licensing the technology along with building and operating production facilities with various partners.
