Maverick Biofuels uses proven, clean-energy technology to convert waste into high-value fuels and plastics.

Mixed-Alcohol Biofuel

Maverick’s mixed-alcohol biofuel is a mixture of ethanol, propanol, butanol, and a small percentage of higher carbon content alcohols.  This mixture of alcohols will have an energy content that is approximately 85% that of gasoline, will have an octane rating higher than gasoline, and will have general handling characteristics that are more compatible with gasoline than ethanol.

Initially, Maverick’s mixed-alcohol biofuel will be sold as an alternative to ethanol.  Over time, we expect that Maverick’s mixed-alcohol biofuel can replace a significant percentage of the ethanol market, since it has the following advantages over ethanol, particularly ethanol from food produced using fermentation processes:

  • A gallon of Maverick’s mixed-alcohol biofuel will contain approximately 85% of the BTU’s found in a gallon of petroleum-derived gasoline, which is approximately a 25% improvement over existing ethanol.
  • Maverick’s process uses less energy than the production of 2nd generation cellulosic ethanol (since it does not need to delignify and depolymerize the starting material) and less water (since it is not fermenting sugars) to produce its mixed-alcohol product.
  • Land used to raise corn grain for ethanol can be used to grow corn or other crops that humans or their livestock can eat; thus, avoiding the food vs. fuel controversy.
  • Maverick’s biofuel production process has feedstock flexibility in that any biomass waste stream can serve as a feedstock.
  • Where Maverick Biofuels uses municipal solid waste as a primary feedstock, it can reduce the amount of waste going to a landfill by 40% or more, extend the life of current landfills and dramatically reduce the need for new landfills in the future.
  • Production will be cost efficient. Currently, the estimated cost per gallon to produce Maverick’s mixed-alcohol biofuel is approximately $1.25 per gallon.
